Are Cottonelle Fresh Care* Flushable Moist Wipes safe for sewer and septic systems? What makes them flushable?

Yes. Kimberly-Clark (Cottonelle®) and other participating member manufacturers worked with industry groups, International Nonwovens & Disposables Association (INDA), and European Disposables and Nonwovens Association (EDANA) to define guidelines to help manufacturers determine if nonwoven consumer products are flushable. These INDA/EDANA flushability guidelines were published in June 2008. The guidelines have multiple tests that evaluate in-home flushability and all methods of disposal (i.e., sewer and septic systems) to ensure products move through a properly maintained and designed home or system.

According to the guidelines, a product is flushable if it 1) clears toilets and properly maintained drainage pipe systems under expected product usage conditions 2) is compatible with existing wastewater conveyance, treatment, reuse and disposal systems and 3) becomes unrecognizable in a reasonable period of time and is safe in the natural receiving environments. More than 20 test methods have been outlined in the guidelines to help manufacturers determine if a product is flushable. All Cottonelle® Flushable Moist Wipes comply with the guidelines.

My Impression: Thanks to Crowdtap and Cottonelle - I was able to try out a new brand of toilet paper and wipes I had never tried before. I know what your thinking - kind of an touchy subject huh? Well.. yes, but let's think everyone has to use toilet paper and it's best to know with rising prices if you get what you pay for.. right? I was surprised by Cottonelle - it's has a very soft texture and the wipes are great as well without causing any discomfort or irritation. As Cottonelle in their latest adds would say what is the use of dry washing a car? If dry washing a car isn't good enough then how is using straight dry toilet paper? - An interesting idea I've never thought of before, but true and when you think of it you'll want to use wipes from now on because the idea and image is just too gross to conceive really. I got the chance to go out and ask a few people their thoughts and opinions on the matter and it was a tad bit uncomfortable, but the fact that they were getting free toilet paper and wipes made it a little easier to talk to them. I explained how I was doing the Crowdtap challenge and although they didn't want to be on camera they've given me good feedback and one lady was already a Cottonelle user, but had not used the wipes so she was pretty excited - well as excited as you could be about toiletries haha.
